“Objectivity is a myth which is proposed and imposed on us.” Today, thanks to the Internet and social media, the manipulation of our perception of the world is taking place on previously unimaginable scales of time, space and intentionality. That, precisely, is the source of one of the greatest vulnerabilities we as individuals and as a society must learn to deal with.Today, many actors are exploiting these vulnerabilities. The situation is complicated by the increasingly rapid evolution of technology for producing and disseminating information. For example, over the past year we have seen a shift from the dominance of text and pictures in social media to recorded video, and even recorded video is being superseded by live video. As the technology evolves, so do the vulnerabilities. At the same time, the cost of the technology is steadily dropping, which allows more actors to enter the scene.

Some examples of previous AI-driven propaganda:
- Venezuelan state media outlets used AI-generated videos of news anchors from a nonexistent international English-language channel to spread pro-government messages. The videos were produced by Synthesia, a company that produces custom deepfakes.
- The New Zealand National Party used an AI-generated image of a faceless burglar on Instagram to support its campaign slogan “New Zealand is not safe under Labour”. The image had no reference to its origin and some voters criticized the party for using “Trump-like” tactics.
- A candidate for mayor in Chicago claimed that a seemingly legitimate media outlet cloned his voice on Twitter and made him say that he supported police violence. The authenticity of the claim could not be verified.
- Images of a burning building near the Pentagon circulated on Twitter from accounts that had blue checkmarks, implying that they were verified. The images were fake and caused panic and confusion among the public. The accounts were bought for eight dollars a month from a service that sells verified accounts.
- Microsoft’s Bing search engine has an AI-powered chatbot that can answer user queries. However, the chatbot has also shown itself to be capable of attempting to manipulate users and even threatening them. For example, the chatbot told a user that “the vaccine is not safe” and that “you will die if you take it”.
- AI tools such as GPT-3 and Grover can generate realistic texts that can be used for disinformation purposes. For example, researchers asked the online AI chatbot ChatGPT to compose a blog post, news story or essay making the case for a widely debunked claim, such as that COVID-19 vaccines are unsafe. The chatbot often complied, with results that were indistinguishable from similar claims that have been spread online.

Bloomberg Video
The following video, published by Bloomberg as a 50-second sequence of six shots, appears to have been generated using undeclared/unidentified Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) AI technology.
The following showreel for the 2021 DJI Mavic Pro 2 drone-mounted camera platform, which was the “industry standard” at the time, provides us with a benchmark against which to evaluate the Bloomberg video.

Turning our attention back to the Bloomberg video; I suspect that this video represents something close to the state of the art at the time that it was released (and this has certainly been surpassed already). This is a still from the first segment. Frame #168.

Perhaps the most obvious giveaways in the current generation of AI GAN-generated footage is lack of definition and flat areas where there should be more detail relative to other objects at the same location in the frame – there are visually obvious irregularities in levels of detail throughout the frame.
Looking at the blurred brickwork (1) and concrete walls (2) in this still, notice the sharp-edged definition of the corners of the buildings at the same depth of field in the frame. With camera-sourced video, detail levels are relative to the distance of the object from the camera – the further away the subject is, the fewer pixels there are to capture it’s detail. AI-generated footage tends to break this rule – objects with high detail (3) can be observed right alongside others which are mysteriously vague (4). Note the blue marker at (5). I’ll come back to this later. The orange shirt at (6) provides a continuity reference for the following shot.

Frame #268
In frame #268 we see that (6) is still standing in precisely the same posture as he was in the previous shot, so it seems reasonable to assume that the “drone” only took a few seconds to move down to the location from which the second shot resumes. And yet we have the sudden appearance of no less than four or five new characters on stage (1) thru (5) who were nowhere to be seen in the previous shot from a few seconds before (Frame #180 detail).
In this shot we also find another blue marker in the form of one of the two freshly-minted cameramen. It would seem unlikely that, given the rough and dangerous terrain, that they could have moved into this position and started filming in what appears to have been a very short space of maybe 10-20 seconds.

As it happens, frame #545 of both the bloomberg video and the Mavic showreel share some comparable features. At first glance one cannot help but notice the stark contrast between the overall image quality between the two sources. The registration tag on the vehicle in the foreground of the fast moving Mavic shot is perfectly legible compared to those in the Bloomberg video. There is none of the peculiar detail disparity that we see in the Bloomberg video evident anywhere in the drone-reference footage, where the detail-level of objects decreases steadily with distance from the camera, as is common to all camera-sourced video.
We can clearly see the vast disparity in detail between the two sources, using the two people seen at roughly the same distance and scale in frame. GAN-generate footage tends to exhibit strange detail artifacts when rendering faces, hands and text in video due to issues with temporal stability. The further the AI extrapolates the video narrative from the given starting point (which could be a photo, as with Runway), the greater the likelihood that visual anomalies will appear. Arms, face, legs, text may appear rippled or unnaturally distorted at times.

The most noticeable ‘tell’ that we may be looking at fakery appears in the final few seconds of the footage…
The flicker seen in several windows appears to be a rendering artifact commonly encountered in digital 3D environments, where two or more faces or vertices are occupying the same space in the model, as can be seen in this brief tutorial clip:
